How to Evaluate a Website Not everything you read online is trustworthy or accurate, but you don't have to be victimized by erroneous ideas and inaccurate information. Here are some tips to help you navigate with confidence. Questions to ask as you browse: Website Content * What is the purpose of the content? (are they trying to sell or inform?) * Does the website look credible? * Is there a way to contact the author or site publisher? * Is the material balanced and reasonable? * Does the content contradict current thinking or scientific evidence? * When was the content published? How old is it? Website Accuracy * Is the content easy-to-read and free from typographical errors? * Is the writer's name listed? * Does the content include footnotes and references (where appropriate)? * Does the page have dead links? On any given subject, always get a second or even third opinion from other websites. Don't build your decision around one particular website or web author. When it comes to health issues, share what you have found with your personal physician. Never use a website to diagnose a suspected disease or illness. |
